Island Updates

Post  Admin on Thu May 29, 2008 7:39 am

Although there's some great transportation around the Island, people still complain *sigh*
So I've installed Runeport at ABC, which looks like a manhole cover.

Click on it, get a list of locations you want to go to, click the cover again when it glows red, and be
sent to your destination, very easy.

I have also put some new australian plants in the Triple-J area, the Island should look as Aussie as
possible. You should note that these plants won't need much water to keep them going... good eh? Wink

Our new co-ordinator should help us get some live shows and forums at the Island up and running too.

Abi is aware of the Admin problems and is thinking of a new tactic to get around this, Admin will be
re-evaluated soon [and that includes me, as it should].

Well as you saw on the video, the island is fairly big.

The problem is that sometimes people don't know how to get to a particular feature of an island,
especially if you're new and there's nobody there to ask... so if you have teleporters which can
get you there fast, it helps... but then you get new people who don't understand those either.

Some people can't fly very well either, and bump into stuff, so having teleportation just makes
things easier.

Secondlife is much much bigger than furrymuck ever was, You saw just one of thousands of
Islands.

Click this location as an example and then zoom out... each square is an island.
http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kelham/149/100/603

At the moment you cannot simply fly over the water to them, I think that'd be a great thing,
but it's not possible yet.

I believe that every four islands has a computer [sim] which runs them, so Linden Labs is
full of PCs and Servers.

Island politics is much different from the old MUCKs.

When you buy an island, it is up to you to create rules which appeal to you, but you also have
to follow Linden Labs rules too, the TOS.

So... You could buy an island and make it look like a place for cowboys, "The Old West", and
you could build the Saloons, the barns, the sheriffs office, jails etc.

Your rules might be that unless you dress in cowboy outfits and speak like a cowboy then you
can't enter... if you're a robot then you might not fit in.

Another person might want a spooky island with vampires etc

Another might be setup to look like the 70s disco era.

It's completely up to you.

As a visitor, you can choose from thousands of islands to go to and meet people.

You don't have to RPG, I never do and neither do my friends... we can't be bothered with it,
So we use SL to just get together and chat, I think lots of people use it in that way.

We don't have RPG on Eragon and not at ABC either.

SL *can* be like the MUCKS, but only on a few islands.

Ok, they're being a bit lazy.

You can access secondlife with dial-up.
Kath, our very determined resident, was on dial-up for almost a year, but it sucks.

In Australia what happens is we get limited broadband, so for instance, we might
be on a 20gb per month plan... and if we go over.... we get "shaped".
This means they drop our speed to 64kb. Other services may go as low as 28kb.

With other servers you pay more if you go over the limit.

Anyway, I was shaped once, and found that I could barely move around.
various effects people do will stick around rather than vanish, and if someone
changes their avatar... say, from fox to wolf, then they will stay half fox and
half wolf [didn't you Vermy?] Wink

You could probably use wireless and satellite, but the problem here is a delay
so that if you try to move forward, your avatar might not move forward for a
few seconds... and also not stop when you take your finger off the key...
but anyone on SL will tell you that this happens most of the time anyway.

You would find that you could join in and talk to everyone, and have a nice
avatar provided that your service did in fact connect to SL to begin with.

The people who would hate that delay are those who play violent shooting
games in SL [Why don't they just **** off and play WoW or something?]

For what we do, it's not going to be a major problem, and certainly better
than dial-up.

You should wait for a new machine though, you're right there.

Why SL said about the dial-up and satellite not working is because a lot of
people don't read details much, so rather than explain, like I have, they just
say "can't be done", it's easier.

In anycase, the software and avatar is free, so if it doesn't work, then you
won't be the loser anyway Smile

There are other 3D chat programs, but as you say, they're limited.
and you can't build the land like you can in SL.

They have structures already created by professionals
rather than by residents.

Everything on SL is built by residents, although Linden Labs does sometimes
build something, but it's up to you if you want to use it or not.

Secondlife is unique in that.

I don't want to go to a new program because I have built such a big identity in
SL, as a werewolf, I don't have any wish to look human at all.

However, what was tested recently was apparently they did something where an
avatar was able to be transferred to someone elses chat program, I'm vague on this,
I think it was still SL, but a non-linden labs version or somesuch.

But the avatar reverted to human form.

This sounds weird, but every avatar in sl has a human one inside of them.

So it's weirdly like wearing a fursuit Smile

"Like Yahoo avatars, that you let you use a anime-esque character like style that looks ugly for me."

Yeah I agree, that look does nothing for me, I really don't like anime/manga in general, it just leaves
me cold.
